CMHA Durham, a welcoming community Mental Health Centre doing all we can to help people move forward, went through the process with Accreditation Canada in the Fall 2012 and received Exemplary Standing which is the highest level and one only a few organizations achieve. Surveyors spent three days on-site from October 22-24, 2012. The process consists of a self-assessment, on-site survey and follow-up actions for improvement. Organizations examine all areas of their service, obtain advice from their peers, increase credibility and involve partners and clients during the on-site interviews. During the process CMHA Durham had to meet the primary care standards, in our Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic (NPLC), in additional to the mental health standards.

The accreditation cycle, performed by Accreditation Canada which a national non-profit independent organization, is every three years. On February 5, 2013 CMHA Durham was notified by Accreditation Canada that following extensive consultation and recommendations stemming from the Qmentum Evaluation their next on-site survey will be lengthened from three to four years.

“I am pleased to let you know we are extending the accreditation status of your organization for an additional year based on your high performance and ongoing commitment to quality improvement,” Susanne Larocque, Chair, Accreditation Decision Committee, Accreditation Canada.

“I appreciate all involved with our Accreditation Process and the efforts put forward. Special thanks goes to all our staff as without their hard work and support we would not have received exceptional status or such recognition,” says Linda Gallacher, CEO of CMHA Durham.

CMHA Durham staff and Board of Directors looks forward to the next on-site survey in 2016. In the meantime CMHA Durham, as we have done for over 53 years, will continue to provide a range of integrated mental health services in a safe and accessible environment.
